EAB Monitoring Tools
There are different lure and trap options for monitoring for Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The standard trap used has been the three-sided sticky prism trap in available green or purple. The shades of green and purple used in the prism traps were selected on the basis of the sensitivity of the EAB eye. Research to optimize detection is still ongoing but what is already known is that generally green traps capture more males while the purple traps capture more females. Typically the green prism traps are suspended high (approximately 30 feet) in the canopy of an Ash tree and the purple prism traps are deployed at ground level.
The commonly used kairomone lures also show a sex-biased response; Z-3-hexenol (leaf alcohol) lures capture males while Manuka oil lures tend to capture females. The Z-3-hexenol lures have a life expectancy of 90+ days while the Manuka oil lures are expected to last about 60 days. The leaf alcohol scent is a chemical normally found in emerging green foliage. The Manuka oil is a rich source of sesquiterpenes which simulate the odor of a distressed Ash tree. The EAB responds to both chemical lures.
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) delimitation surveys in the USA currently utilize the purple prism traps with both a Z-3 hexenol lure and a Manuka oil lure. Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) surveys in Canada are currently using the green prism traps and a high load Z-3-hexenol lure. There is no unequivocal best trap and lure combination. Other factors to consider are lure longevity and cost.
Reusable MultiFunnel traps are now also available in purple or green. APHIS has shown that purple or green MultiFunnel traps perform as well or better than prism traps. MultiFunnel traps can be used over and over again and are not glued making them much easier to use in the field, and, as EAB is captured in a cup rather than on a sticky surface, easier to analyze trap catches. These are priced the same as the black MultiFunnel traps, making them more economical if you plan on monitoring for more than one season.
We only have a limited quantity of purple or green MultiFunnel traps available. If you are interested, please contact us.
